As a new CrossFit Box, we are all getting to know each other and building that tight community we always envisioned. Each month we will be profiling a CrossFit Grail Athlete that is interesting and inspirational. A person that demonstrates a positive attitude, shows up every day and puts their heart and soul into their workout, never gives up, and cheers everyone on. And someone who is pretty cool! Although we think everyone brings all these things to the table, we can only pick one.
July 2017 Athlete of the Month: Shannon Powell
Why we chose Shannon: Shannon joined CrossFit Grail the second day we opened. After taking a break from CrossFit, she was ready to get back into it and find her FIT again! Shannon has demonstrated that it does not matter how much life gets in the way, you just have to keep coming back and moving forward. On top of that, Shannon exemplifies what the Grail Community is about. For our ‘Murph’ event on Memorial Day, Shannon chose instead of participating in the event, to make posters (staying up until 2am) for the event and for each athlete, which she placed along the one-mile running route. She then waited at the turnaround point to cheer them all on! Shannon’s husband, Bob is an honorary member of the Grail Community, having been co-BBQ Master for our previous 2 events. Here is a little about Shannon in her own words:
Tell us a little about yourself:
I am a Colorado Native but lived in AZ for 11 years. I have a wonderful step-daughter that is in the US Air Force and a very active granddaughter and grandson. I love to be outdoors and be amazed at what nature has to offer.
How long have you been doing CrossFit and what got you started?
I have been doing CrossFit for 16 months, but had lost my way for approximately 8 months of that time. I am now in the CrossFit Grail Community and have been encouraged to be consistent and forge a new path to achieve my Quest.
My husband had been doing CrossFit and would tell me about his achievements, so I decided to check it out. I sincerely thought there is no way I can do this. Then I gave it a try and LOVED the challenge and celebrating things I conquered that I had thought were impossible.
What did you do for your fitness before CrossFit?
I played sports in school and made attempts after College to be a part of a few co-ed teams, but was not committed. I have also had a personal trainer and a gym membership that I started after a successful weight loss made possible through eating healthier. I missed the dual component of a Team environment with personal achievements.
What do you like most about CrossFit?
CrossFit Grail provides the community and the dual component of encouraging Team environment and personal achievements that challenge all of us to be a better version of ourselves.
How has doing CrossFit changed your life outside of the Box?
I am more focused, have the energy to work long hours if needed and get more accomplished. I am more outgoing, have higher motivation and love trying new things.
What motivates you to keep WOD-ing?
The CrossFit Grail Community and my supportive husband.
What do you consider to be your biggest accomplishment? (in any area of life)
Identifying that HEALTH is mind, body and spirit and that I need to continually attend to each in order to sustain balance.
What is YOUR QUEST?
This month: Celebrate my 10 Year Wedding Anniversary, Full Wall Walk, Deeper Squat
This year: Celebrate the last few months of my 30s and accept turning 40 J, 85% of WODs RXd, headstand on paddle board in lake/reservoir
This lifetime: Continued Health journey with adjustments as required to conquer any life challenges that come my way.
